Service-learning

The initiative that I completed for teaching practical was a book club for my grade seven class. the initiative involved getting the learners to read books, magazines or newspaper articles, and getting them to complete book or article reviews based on the material that they read. the successful part of the project was a few learners read books and newspapers.one learner completed a few book reviews. the challenges of this project were getting the learners to follow the instructions and read the materials. some learners tended to talk to others instead of reading. Whenever the register teacher left the me to look after the learners, they would become disruptive and not listen to my instructions. There were very few learners that completed the reviews. The register was not consistent with the project and did not support me whenever I would get the learners to read for example; he would allow the learners to do their homework instead of reading. This service learning has made me realise that the learners do not appreciate the gift of reading. Teachers have lost the importance of reading for children. This initiative has not changed me related to my professional attitude because I have remained respectful with the teachers and learners. I have not gained any new knowledge from this initiative. The only skill hat I gained is patience from trying to get all my learners to stop being disruptive and read in the class. I have not gained any new attitudes because I remained professional throughout the project. If the learners were consistent and the teacher supported the project, there would have been an increase in vocabulary skills, the discipline level would have increase as the learners would have been kept busy with their reading. The sustainability related to this initiative would not exist as the school did not support the project and the learners were not instructed by the teachers to follow with the program.
